Thanks for the history lesson. Learn something new everyday. Did I get it right this time? I had never heard of the K–T extinction event, but that is what google told me to call it.
Anyway, the sky has a base gradient and I just used a cloud brush with a low opacity. Really simple but effective.
aah. photoshop's grass brush. Did you know there wasn't really grass at the time of the dinosaurs? just ferns and plants.

The big bang was when the universe was created, not when the dinosaurs were wiped out by a meteor. Aren't we all geeks here? Don't we all know this?
